Size Up Residential, Newton
The fantasy to own a house evolves parallel with the obsession of bigness.
The consumption of bigger spaces reflects the superfluous possession of “stuff” in a typical American household.
The average size of American single family houses skyrockets from 983 square feet in 1950 to 2,350 square feet in 2004.
The prevailing change has been beyond the economic context.
The new life style change our perception of individual privacy, everyday convenience, and unwillingness to share a territory.
In this case of the 1949-built, post-war, 1,269 square-feet single family homes which had 2 bedrooms and one-and-a-half bathrooms,
the proposed design increases to the total 2,780 square feet of area with 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
The natural light is introduced to the interior spaces with several skylights.
The design brings the quality of charm, bright and warmth in the house. The historic Cape Style façade is preserved,
and with new stained natural cedar clipboards it blends in with the suburban landscape.
